like this. he would maintain our current level of defense spending over the next eight years. he would spend way more than a cold war-style drawdown. way more than the sequester, but he would treat the budget as the new normal with slight increases over time. that's the obama plan for the biggest single thing on which we spend discretionary money. mr. obama's opponents, on the other hand, the math ticket, the hard-nosed practical numbers guys, their plan for defense spending looks like this. ta da! that's what mitt romney is proposing for military spending. an otherwise enormous amount of money. this is what they are planning on doing. the highest level of military spending since the korean war. because, you know, forget your hope and change. what the country needs is math, math, math. how does the ticket plan to balance this giant plus sign contained in their plan? this massive increase in government spending. where does the minus come from if they want to increase spending by that much? this was the scene today in a place called van meter, iowa. just outside des moines. this is what

a defensive position. the president has been attacked. i think it's time to return the favor to romney. your thoughts this week. >> it's what he had to do in the debate, didn't do, and it's what he has to do every day between now and the next debate. he has to draw the contrast on medicare and straighten out this myth that the president cut $716 million from medicare benefits. he didn't. they're cut from medicare providers like insurance companies that are overcharging. he has to attack on the issue of taxes. there aren't enough tax loopholes or tax deductions to pay for romney's tax cut unless you cut into home interest mortgage deductions, unless you get rid of state and local taxes. that will hit the middle class hard. you have to be honest about this. the debate hurt obama and helped romney, and romney's gotten a bump in the polls, although it seems to be flattening out. you look at the new poll in ohio, the president is at 51%, ronl is at 47%. i think the president, the fundamental structure of the race hasn't been changed, but if he doesn't go on the attack, if biden doesn't do a good

reason to feel good about his campaign, where it is right now, after weeks on the defensive. as we noted he's rising in the polls, and seeing more enthusiasm inside the party and out on the campaign trial. one good night goes a long way but one good night does not amount to a free pass. many of the tough questions that he was facing before the debate remain on the table afterwards, and some of his answers during the debate are raising new questions. wolf blitzer spoke at length today with the republican candidate. here's a portion of that interview. >> were you surprised by the president's performance? >> i actually thought he described pretty appropriately and pretty effectively his policies. i just happen to disagree with those policies. we talked about the economy, he really is not proposing anything he hasn't talked about for the last four years. i think the challenge that he has is that his ideas are just not demonstrating the kind of results he would hope for, and people recognize that. >> are you confident, governor, that paul ryan will take on joe biden thursday night the way you

that, we now know what happened next. a statement was made available. his defense attorneys helped make that happen, given to a radio station and they played that very criticism that he was told not to speak. his attorneys say, hey, there's a first amendment free speech. he should be allowed to say what he wants to say and so he did. it's interesting to see in court whether this comes up in any way, shape or form. prosecutors have been wanting to cross examine him but usually that doesn't occur with this phase of allocation. back to you. >> susan cannedioti has been covering this story for us for a long time. thank you, susan. appreciate it. >>> gloria allred, victims' rights attorney. good to see you. >> thank you, soledad. >> my the victim is what he's saying and lists everybody else who, for some reason, would be conspiring against him. susan said part of the strat i didn't was he wasn't going to be allowed to say that in the courtroom so he's getting it out and getting it on the record first. how do you think that impacts what will happen in the courtroom today? >> well, i think tha

if the president's not on defense in some of these states. are we going to take a beating down ballot? that one debate performance turned the mood of republicans around? it's just one debate. there are two more debates to go. you heard governor romney, his tone and his tenor. senator obama stumbled many times back in 2008. he has stumbled here in that first debate in 2012. the test is, how do you recover? and governor romney is more confident and he's trying to address his weaknesses. gloria just noted, reaching for the middle. saying, i want to governor. i'm not going to lay out my entire tax plan, because i would have to negotiate with democrats a and republicans. trying to make it not just about big bird, but we can't keep borrowing from money to pay for things we can't have. trying to make that 47% go away. wolf, in my travels, in michigan a couple of weeks ago, and in ohio, middle class people who have struggled the past few years were deeply offended by that. so governor romney's smart to try to make it go away. >> i want everybody to stand by. we have much more to assess what's going on.
